Avad have just become one of the first small companies in the region to have a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) carried out on them. The costs and complex ties involved have usually ruled out smaller organisations but in this instance Environmental Business Network (EBN) commissioned the study. It should tell Avad the environmental impact of its products from cradle to grave. This will give Andrew and his team encouragement that they are going in the right direction and offer further alternatives to materials and manufacturing techniques.
Unlike many new small businesses, Andrew sees the big picture and has the aim of where he firmly wants to be firmly in his sights. He describes himself in the analogy of a sculptor that brought home a block of marble. The young boy next door watched as he sculpted a lion out of the marble, when asked by the boy how he knew there was a lion in there he replied: ‘Simple, I just chipped away everything that wasn’t lion!’
