Atrium - 100% Design, by Rita Halasi

The most striking feature of the hardwood furniture by this Sheffield design workshop is its construction. One is first reminded of Gerrit Thomas Rietveld’s constructivist furniture, or some pieces of the German company Moormann.  At a glance, Avad’s pieces have a cobbled-together look with their appearance being purposefully imperfect.  Their young designers reject dry perfection and professional high-tech appearances for more honest and natural design principles.  But would it be obtuse to assume that the structure of low-tech objects is primitive.  The highly original assembly system of the furniture has won an international prize (International Design Eco Award 2001), for the joining of components without adhesives.
